Media advisory, Friday, January 6, 2012, 11 p.m., Bloor Street viaduct, R.I.D.E. Spot Checks Everywhere

On Friday, January 6, 2012, at 11 p.m., TPS officers from 54 and 55 Divisions, in conjunction with the R.C.M.P, O.P.P., GO Transit Safety Officers, and Canadian National Railway Police, will team up on a R.I.D.E spot check on the Bloor Street viaduct.

The media is invited to attend tonight's public awareness event.

Staff Inspector Neil Corrigan, 54 Division, and City Counsellor Mary Fragedakis will be present.

Police will be sharing information, working together in their efforts to make our roads safer.

Police remind the public to have a plan prior to consuming alcoholic beverages, such as a designated driver, taxi and public transit.

“Drinking for one, can be devastation to many," said Sergeant Jack West.

Homicide #1/2012, Jamahl Franklin, 20, Update, Man charged with Second Degree Murder, Baptists Bernier, 22, Police continue to appeal for witnesses

On Sunday, January 1, 2012, at 4 a.m., police responded to a call for a shooting at 101 Hupfield Trail.

See previous release.

On Thursday, January 5, 2012, Baptists Bernier, 22, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder.

He appeared in court on Friday, January 6, 2012.

Further investigation has revealed that photographs were taken using cameras and cell phones at the house party at 101 Hupfield Trail, where the victim was prior to his death. Police are urging anyone with any photographs to provide them to investigators.

Public Safety Alert, Lost medication

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of lost medication.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 8 a.m., a container of methadone was lost in the Dufferin Street/St. Clair Avenue West area

The liquid could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

SECURITY GUARDS OFFICER BEATEN TIED UP DURING ROBBERY

ALBUQUERQUE NM Albuquerque police say a burglar dropped a safe and fired at an officer before being shot dead outside Archdiocese of Santa Fe offices in Albuquerque late Wednesday.

Investigators later found a security guard tied up inside the Catholic Center offices on St. Joseph’s Place NW near Coors Boulevard NW.

The unarmed guard told police he was making his rounds when he was confronted by two men who demanded money and beat him.

At about 10:30 p.m. police received a call about a burglary in progress at the Catholic Center. One of the first officers on the scene confronted a masked man carrying a safe.

The burglar then dropped the safe, pulled out a pistol and fire at least once at the officer. The officer returned fire striking the burglar at least twice.

The security officer is in good condition.

Man faces 14 charges in robbery investigation, Wells Davis, 25, Photograph of man released

On Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at 8:10 p.m., 14 Division officers arrested a man in connection with a series of robberies in Toronto.

It is alleged that:

- between December 2011 and January 2012, the accused walked into 15 variety stores in the Parkdale area

- the accused attempted to make a small purchase, so the cashier would open the cash register

- the accused assaulted the cashier while he reached into the cash register

- the accused then stole a quantity of cash before he fled the scene

- in other cases, the accused reached into the register while the cashier was distracted, stole a quantity of cash and then fled the scene

Wells Davis, 25, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) seven counts of Theft under
2) five counts of Robbery
3) Attempt Theft under
4) Possession Property obtained by Crime

Police believe there may be more victims.

Distracted driving, "Last Call: Whatever You Have To Say Can Wait"

The Toronto Police Service would like to highlight the dangerous activities associated with drivers who use cellphones, hand-held communications and entertainment devices while driving.

The legislation that came into effect on October 26, 2009 created a specific offence for this driving behaviour, which is known to distract drivers from driving safely.

The law applies to hand-held wireless communications and hand-held electronic entertainment devices.

Drivers must use only wireless devices that can be used in a hands-free manner:

- a cell phone with an earpiece or headset using voice-dialling, or plugged into the vehicle's sound system

- a global positioning system (GPS) device that is properly secured to the dashboard or another accessible place in the vehicle

- a portable audio player that has been plugged into the vehicle's sound system,

9-1-1 calls for emergency assistance are not prohibited by the legislation.

This dangerous activity associated with drivers who talk, text, type, dial or email using handheld cellphones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices continues to occur on our streets.

The Toronto Police Service will continue to educate motorists about this dangerous driving practice and enforce the law.

Police request assistance with shooting investigation, St Clair Avenue West/Old Weston Road

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance with a shooting investigation.

On Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 4:21 a.m., police responded to a radio call on St Clair Avenue West for a man bleeding.

Officers located a man suffering from obvious gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital via emergency run. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

Missing man, Ajay Mathur, 20

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a missing man.

Ajay Mathur, 20, was last seen on Friday, December 24, 2011, in the John Garland Boulevard/Martin Grove Road area, and was last spoken to over the phone on Saturday, December 30, 2011.

He recently arrived in Canada from India and is described as having a brown complexion, 5’10”, 161 lbs., clean-shaven, with brown eyes, and short black hair. He has large tattoos on each inner forearm.
