Public Safety Alert, Telemarketing fraud

The Toronto Strategic Partnership would like to make the public aware of a telemarketing fraud.

It is known as the “Anti-Virus Scam” and begins when victims receive an unsolicited phone call from a suspect claiming to be from an internet service provider and/or a related business. The suspect(s) claim they can fix viruses on the victim’s computer and/or delete unused files to increase the speed of the computer. The suspect then demands payment and asks for the victim's credit card information. The suspect(s) also asks to access the victim’s compute remotely to perform the fix.

In 2011, the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre received 9,349 complaints in regards to this. Of those 2,119 are victims with a reported dollar loss of $446,609.04.

The Toronto Strategic Partnership is warning the public that the offered service may be false and allowing suspects to remotely access computers could result in damages to the computer and/or software and access to personal information stored on the computer.

The Toronto Strategic Partnership recommends the following steps when receiving an unsolicited phone call for computer service and/or repair:

- ask the representative for the company name, address, phone number and references
- do not provide any personal or credit card information
- tell the representative you want to verify their information and end the call
- never use verification provided by the person/entity that contacts you
- take steps to verify the information provided to you, ie, phone number look up, internet search, Better Business Bureau search
- check your local police service website and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website to see if there is a warning about the scam
- if you believe it is a scam, call your local police service

The Toronto Strategic Partnership is a multi-law enforcement agency, formed in response to ever-increasing cross-border fraudulent mass marketing schemes. The Partnership consists of the Competition Bureau of Canada, Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services, Ontario Ministry of Revenue, Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes Unit, Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Rackets Branch, The Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, RCMP-GTA Commercial Crime Section, U.S. Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the U.K. Office of Fair Trading.

SHOPLIFTERS SHOOT AT JC PENNEY SECURITY GUARDS

FEBRUARY 24 2012

PLEASANT HILL CA  – An attempt by a group of women to shoplift items from a store at the Sunvalley Mall resulted in gunfire and the arrest of four suspects, police said.

Concord police responded to the JCPenney parking lot about 5:45 p.m. after members of the store’s security team tried to detain the four women after noticing the shoplifting attempt, Corp. David Dunkley said in a news release.

But the women fought back, assaulting two of the agents and pulling out a gun and firing several shots at the security agents, Dunkley said. The loss prevention officers escaped and was not by the gunfire, but the commotion helped the four suspects escape, two of them fleeing through the parking lot on foot and the other two in a vehicle.

Police located the fleeing vehicle and ordered the suspects out of at gunpoint and arrested the women after finding evidence inside that linked them to the JCPenney robbery, Dunkley said.

The names and ages of the suspects were not immediately available late Thursday, but police said all were adults.

All four women were arrested on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, battery, brandishing a firearm, possession of a loaded and concealed firearm, possession of stolen property and threatening a victim/witness to a crime, Dunkley said. They were to be taken to County Jail in Martinez.
