Arrests, Injuries, Because of a pair of Sneakers

Police across the country say that they had to break up fights, deal with crowds of 500-2000 people, attend to injured shoppers and make numerous arrests and all because of a pair of sneakers.

Crowds formed early at many stores across the country for the release of the new limited edition Nike Air Jordan sneakers which went on sale at 4:00am for $180.

In the Seattle area, police say that officers used pepper spray to break up fights among shoe buyers who pushed and shoved outside the Westfield Southcenter mall to pick up some of the first Nike retro Air Jordans that went on sale early Friday morning.

Police said more than 1,000 people lined up outside the mall, located just south of Seattle. Police were called in to control disputes that broke out over line-cutting or pushing.
Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.
Several arrests were made.

Tukwila Police Officer Mike Murphy said about 20 people was sprayed in a group of unruly teens. One man was arrested for assault after police say he pushed an officer. No one was injured. “It was verging on a riot. Police report within the crowd, there was evidence of alcohol and marijuana.

In Georgia, at least four people were arrested in a mad dash by customers hoping to purchase the the new Nike Air Jordans at a suburban Atlanta shopping mall.

DeKalb County Georgia police said up to 20 squad cars responded to a mall in Lithonia. They said a large crowd broke down a door to get inside before a store opened. Police say they escorted most of the people back outside, but took four into custody.

Charlotte North CarolinaPolice and Medics were called to three Charlotte-area malls before daybreak Friday, after shoppers seeking Air Jordan shoes became unruly.

No injuries were reported, but at least one fight broke out, and a door was damaged at a mall. Police cleared patrons from the malls.

At Northlake Mall, a door was ripped from the hinge and the glass broken. Police and mall management there cleared the mall by 7 a.m.

Hundreds of shoe-seekers flocked to area stores, where police were also called to maintain order. At the Bobcats store at Time Warner Cable Arena, the crowd – including young children and babies – swelled into the hundreds, with police lined up at barricades.

“This is way crazier than Black Friday!” yelled a man at the Bobcats store. Hundreds of shoppers remained milling around in front of the barricades, even after being told by police that there were no more Air Jordans for sale at the store

One person was arrested at a mall in Spotsylvania County, Va. during a disturbance and police at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, reported about 1,500 people in line to buy 300 pairs of shoes available at a store. Some pushing and shoving was reported, and there also were reports of problems at Lafayette Square Mall in Indianapolis.

Mall security was also overwhelmed and need police assistance in Kansas City, Savannah Georgia, and Raleigh North Carolina and at numerous other malls.

The reason for the trouble is that only a limited edition of the re-release of the Air Jordan XI Concord shoes, made by Nike are available. The shoes were released initially in 1996, and their return had people standing in lines for up to 24 hours at some malls and sporting good stores around the country.

One buyer walking away with the shoes said it’s a classic style that sells for $180 a pair retail, but on the Internet can fetch up to $400.
