Third video release of 9-1-1 PSA campaign, 9-1-1 for Kids

Today is the first day of March Break for most kids. This means there are many children and teenagers with some free time on their hands. It would be a perfect time to teach or revisit 9-1-1 safety and responsibilities.

Click on the link for the PSA video.

Perhaps this is the first time you will discuss what 9-1-1 is, and how to call, or maybe it’s time for a refresher. Every year, during school breaks, our 9-1-1 operators handle more calls from kids playing with the phone, calling to see if it works, and sometimes even making prank calls. These calls tie up resources and delay our response to genuine emergencies.

Here are a few teaching points to share with your kids:

- call 9-1-1 when there is an emergency and you need fire, police or an ambulance, or when a crime is in progress

- when you are at home, it’s always best to use the house phone when calling
9-1-1 rather than a cell phone

- if you call 9-1-1 (even by mistake) DO NOT hang up! Wait for the operator to answer, so they can confirm that there is no emergency. If the caller is young, the operator will want to speak to an adult to confirm the child is not home alone, and that they are safe

- have your small children practice on a toy phone. It’s NEVER OK to practice on a real phone or an old cell phone. Cell phones that do not have the battery removed (even if no longer part of your phone plan) can still call 9-1-1

- if your child is calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone, remember that 9-1-1 operators don’t know where the call is coming from so, whenever possible, it is important for the children to know their location

- It’s NEVER OK to play with any real phone – this includes pay phones in the mall

- it’s NEVER OK to call 9-1-1 just to see if it works, or to see what will happen, or for help with your homework. Visit us on Facebook to learn more about the 9-1-1 system. We're happy to answer any questions you may have about 9-1-1.

- NEVER call 9-1-1 for your pet. Have any emergency veterinarian number handy in the event your pet needs emergency care

-ALWAYS lock your cell phone keypad before putting it in your pocket or bag

Have a safe and healthy March Break.

March Break, March Safe Campaign, Monday, March 12, 2012 − Sunday, March 18, 2012

During the week of Monday, March 12, 2012, to Sunday, March 18, 2012, the Toronto Police Service will be conducting the annual March Break pedestrian safety campaign.

The “March Break, March Safe" campaign is designed to promote the education, awareness and enforcement strategies intended to heighten public awareness of pedestrian safety.

While children will be celebrating the arrival of March Break, the Toronto Police Service would like to remind parents and caregivers that the safety of the children in their care must remain a top priority.

The need to be aware and alert at all times on any road, and even in the most routine circumstances, is a key component to moving through traffic safely. This applies to pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, and transit-users alike. We ask those who do drive, to take extra care on the roads and in parking lots, especially in areas where children and seniors might be present.

Pedestrians/transit-users tips:

Parents and caregivers can help reinforce some of these pedestrian safety messages to children, as well as some of our more vulnerable seniors and transit users.

- Stop, look, listen and think before entering the roadway
- Utilize crossings at controlled areas, intersections and crosswalks
- Make eye contact with drivers and other road users,
- Wear reflective or bright clothing whenever possible
- Never run into the street
- Obey crossing signals and signs

Driver Safety Tips during the March Break:

A driver who is aware and alert can avoid potential hazards and other distractions.

General Driving Tips:

- Scan to identify pedestrians and cyclists entering the road from curbs and driveways or when approaching intersections
- Be ready for the unexpected, avoid using distracting devices
- Leave at least 2-3 seconds following distance between you and vehicles ahead
- In fog, rain, snow or darkness, use your full headlighting system. Remember, when conditions require you to use your windshield wipers, you should turn on your headlights as well
- To avoid backing onto or out of a parking space, pull straight through two stalls (where available) so you are parked with the nose of your vehicle facing out
- Drive in travelled lanes only - avoid driving across or through parking spaces
- Use rear-view and outside mirrors often and frequently check your speed

During the campaign, all road users will be subject to various education and enforcement initiatives. Let's all work together to make the rest of the season safe.
