Man charged in sexual assault investigation

On Monday, October 17, 2011, a man was arrested in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

It is alleged that:

- a 25-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by the accused at Debre Selam St. Michael’s Church, 125 Broadview Avenue

The accused was a volunteer at the church.

Ashenafi Kahsay, 32, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Sexual Assault

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at 10 a.m., room 501.

Police request assistance with shooting investigation

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance with a shooting investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 6:04 p.m., several shots were fired at a townhouse complex in the Finch Avenue/Topcliffe Avenue area.

At the time of the shooting, there were a number of people in their backyards celebrating a birthday.

Public Safety Alert, Stolen medication

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, October 20, 2011, a clear zip-lock bag, containing a quantity of medication, was stolen in the Queen Street East/Coxwell Avenue area

The stolen medication consisted of:

1) 10 pills of 500 mg of Mylan Amoxicillin
2) 85-100 pills of 10 mg of Apo Diazepam
3) 5 mg Endocet
4) 20 mg Apo Cephalex
5) 20 mg Cipralex
6) half-pound of marijuana for medical use

The pills could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Man faces three charges in sexual assault investigation

On Wednesday, October 12, 2011, police arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

It is alleged that:

- on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, the accused sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in the Kingston Road/Morningside Avenue area

Sebastian Morana, 23, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Sexual Assault
2) Sexual Interference
3) Invitation to sexual touching

He is described as white, 5’6", 160 lbs., with dark-brown shaved hair and both ears pierced.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, room 407, at 1 p.m.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Homicide #40/2011

On Friday, October 21, 2011, at 12:09 a.m., police responded to a call for the sound of gunshots at 10 Crendon Drive.

It is reported that:

- police located two men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the body

- both victims were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries

- one of the victims has died

A post-mortem examination is yet to be scheduled.

Police are trying to identify a newer, silver, possibly import, vehicle last seen fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

Public Safety Alert, Increase in second-floor residential break-and-enters, Area bounded by Lawrence Avenue West, Spadina Avenue, Yonge Street and Dupont Street

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an increase in break-and-enters into second-floor apartments in the area bounded by Lawrence Avenue West, Spadina Avenue, Yonge Street and Dupont Street.

Police are encouraging residents to consider the following steps to prevent criminals gaining access through windows or balconies:

- using exterior lighting in backyards if warranted

- arming residential alarms if installed

- avoiding storing ladders or outdoor furniture in exposed areas where they may be used as climbing tools

- using timers for interior and exterior lights

- while on vacation, have a trusted neighbour periodically check on your home

- reporting any suspicious persons or activity immediately to police

Man faces nine charges in fraud investigation

During September, members of the Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes Unit, Organized Crime Enforcement Section, conducted an investigation into a scheme operating in the GTA.

It is alleged that:

- the accused fraudulently transfered $1,435,500 from a business account held by a major financial institution to another business account

- a portion of these funds were then used to purchase 9 kgs. of gold bullion with a value of approximately $528,000

- attempts to purchase an additional $680,000 in gold bullion were thwarted as a result of this investigation

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, James Moundreas, 22, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) Conspiracy To Commit an Indictable Offence
2) Fraud Over
3) four counts of Identity Theft
4) two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
5) Possess Instruments of Forgery and Fail to Comply – Probation

The accused was scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Thursday, October 20, 2011, room 501, at 10 a.m.

Police request assistance with personal injury collision, Birchmount Road/Allanford Road

On Wednesday, October 20, 2011, at 7:46 p.m., police responded to a call for a personal injury collision on Birchmount Road, at Allanford Road.

It is reported that:

- a 41-year-old man, driving a Mazda car was westbound on Allanford Road, making a left turn at Birchmount Road, to proceed south

- a 46-year-old man was crossing Birchmount Road, on the south side, when he was struck by the driver of the Mazda, knocking him to the ground

- the driver stopped, exited his vehicle and attended to the injured man

- the driver and the injured man were then struck by a Toyota Sienna vehicle, driven by a 58-year-old man, who was travelling northbound on Birchmount Road,

- both men were pinned for a short time beneath the van.

The injured man and the driver of the Mazda sustained life-threatening injuries.

Public Safety Alert Suspicious incident, Melgund Road/Wells Hill Avenue area

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a suspicious incident.

It is reported that:

- on Monday, October 17, 2011, at 3:30 p.m., a 12-year-old boy was walking through the southeast end of a park in the Melgund Road/Wells Hill Avenue area

- the boy was approached by a man, who walked up behind him, and grabbed him by the wrist

- the boy was able to free himself

The suspect is described as white, 50, 5'6", medium build, wrinkled face, white hair with a white beard. He was last seen wearing a black puffy jacket and beige pants.

Police request assistance with personal injury collision, Don Valley Parkway/Lawrence Avenue East

On Tuesday, October 19, 2011, at 9:47 p.m., police responded to a personal injury collision in the southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway, under the Lawrence Avenue East overpass.

It is reported that:

- a 38-year-old man, driving a tractor/trailer, was southbound on the Don Valley Parkway, approaching the Lawrence Avenue East overpass

- the driver lost control of the truck, causing it to jackknife and hit the overpass barrier and support columns

- two other involved vehicles, a Toyota Camry and Saturn, crashed into the truck, with the Toyota Camry coming to rest on top of the Saturn

- a passenger from the truck was ejected upon impact into the barrier

- four involved people were sent to hospital, including the truck driver, with non-life-threatening injuries.
