Store Security Guard Attacked-Robbed at Gunpoint
Police swarmed to an east Erie gas station late Monday morning after a parking-lot fistfight ended in gunfire.
Other officers were summoned to the station a little more than 12 hours later, after police said five armed gunmen overpowered a security guard and helped themselves to cash and tobacco products.
The shooting and the robbery occurred at the Country Fair store at 957 E. 26th St. It sits two doors east of a Kwik Fill station, at 921 E. 26th St., that was robbed six times over four months before parent company United Refining Co., of Warren, shut it down in late November.
The Country Fair robbery happened at about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, when two men armed with handguns confronted the store’s security guard, who had stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and was talking on a cell phone, Erie Police Chief Steve Franklin said. The men forced the security guard back into the store and onto the ground, Franklin said.
Three other men, two of whom appeared to be carrying guns, then ran into the store and joined the other robbers in rounding up the three store employees, Franklin said. The robbers forced the employees to open the store’s cash registers, and they took an undisclosed sum of cash, along with cigarettes and other tobacco products, he said.
The robbers then fled the store and were last seen heading south on East Avenue, Franklin said.
Detectives are also interviewing other witnesses, and are reviewing surveillance video from the Country Fair, he said.

Alabama Security Officer Shot
A Mobile man acquitted of murder 7 years ago now faces new charges in a shooting that occurred early Wednesday at a Prichard strip club, officials said.
Aaron Lytaun Dunning, 30, faces 2 counts of 2nd-degree assault and discharging a weapon into an occupied building. The shooting occurred about 3:10 a.m. Wednesday at the Toy Box Gentlemen’s Club on Wilson Avenue, Police Chief Jimmie Gardner said.
Prichard police arrested Dunning for allegedly shooting the club’s manager and security guard after he and another man were thrown out of the nightspot, Gardner said.
The gunman and another man – identified by police as Willie James Harris Jr. – fled in a red Cadillac, but were caught a short time later on Interstate 65, Gardner said.
Dunning was booked into Metro Jail shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday and released about 9:30 a.m. with the total bail for all 3 charges set at $9,000, records showed.
Gardner said that the club manager asked Dunning and Harris to leave “because of their rude behavior in the club.” He said he did not know what the men had done.
After the men were thrown out of the club, Gardner said, Dunning allegedly told the manager, “‘I got something for you’ and came back and shot both the security guard and the manager in the lower left leg.”
Both victims were taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center with serious injuries.

Chicago Security Guard Killed at Nightclub
A nightclub security bouncer and a partygoer celebrating his 30th birthday were shot dead outside a bar in Chicago’s River West neighborhood early Christmas Day, police and relatives said.
Robert Warren, 34, a security guard and factory worker Jose Duckins, 30, were both killed in the gunfire outside the Victor Hotel nightclub in the 300 block of North Sangamon.
Detectives Sunday were questioning a suspect who had been thrown out of the club earlier that night, but returned and “just started shooting,” Warren’s niece April Bullock said.
Her uncle, of the 7300 block of North Damen, “was just doing his job and he was killed for no reason,” Bullock added. “He had kids – we’re all in shock.”
No charges had been filed as of Sunday evening, and the shooting was still under investigation, Chicago Police Officer Veejay Zala said.

Store Security Guard Saves Baby’s Life
A father was frantic. His baby had gone limp and stopped breathing.
A Nebraska Furniture Mart security officer calmly stepped in and helped perform CPR.
Without him, and a nurse who was shopping in the store, the Rahman family said they believe they would not have their baby girl today.
Mahira Rahman, who is not even 1 year old, suffered a seizure while the family was shopping. Surveillance video captured the father’s frantic actions in front of security officer Mark Warren’s work station.
As others called 911, Warren stepped in to save the little girl’s life when he realized that the father wasn’t taking decisive action.
“I took the child and put her right here and started to do the assessment like you learn in basic CPR class,” he recalled recently.
Frantic family members surrounded him, watching Warren’s every move.
“You just kind of say a little prayer and hope that you do the right thing and you focus on the patient, the child” he said. “You don’t worry about what’s going on around you.”
Nebraska Furniture Mart provides training for all its security officers to ensure they are ready to deal with every possible emergency, store director Ed Lipsett said.
“We put all of our security officers through quite a bit of extensive training including First Aid and CPR and anything we can to make sure our customers have a safe environment to shop in,” Lipsett said.
After such excitement, some might have wanted to head home to decompress. Not Warren and his colleagues.
“We all went back to work taking care of other customers,” he said with a smile.

Security Guard Rescues Robbery Victim
Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies are trying to identify a man who sexually assaulted and robbed a woman inside her apartment then left her tied up until she was freed by a security guard.
It happened at the Warren Oaks apartment complex on the 2400 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard.
Steven Aguilar, a security guard for the complex, said the woman was tied up for nearly 10 hours.
Aguilar said he was walking around the property around 10:30 p.m. Monday when a woman waved him down. He heard someone mumbling for help near a window, Aguilar said.
Aguilar went to the apartment and knocked on the door. When he got inside, he found a woman partially clothed in a bedroom with duct tape over her mouth. Her hands and feet were tied behind her with rope.
I was kind of panicking this was new to me,” said Aguilar.
He called 911 and used a kitchen knife to free the woman.
“She felt fine. Her arms were hurting and her hands were numb,” Aguilar said. “She could barely walk, but put clothes on. It took her a minute because she was hurting.”
The victim told Aguilar the man came to her apartment around noon for a massage appointment. The man carried tape and rope with him in a jacket then left with the woman’s phone and cash, Aguilar said.
Deputies responded to the complex, but only have a vague description of the attacker. He’s described as a black man in his mid-30′s to late-40′s.
The property manager at Warren Oaks would not say anything about what happened.
Several residents, who were contacted by phone, were not aware of the incident until they saw it on the news.

Armed Car Security Officers Engage Hijacker in Gunbattle
The FBI’s bank robbery task force is investigating a brazen daylight armored car hijacking outside a Heights-area grocery store.
The armed man grabbed the Triple D Security van about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday while it was parked at a Kroger gas station in the 1300 block of West 11th at Shepherd.
One of the guards was inside making a delivery when the hijacker approached the van and managed to get inside.
“He gained access between deliveries. How exactly that occurred is what we’re still piecing together,” said Special Agent Shauna Dunlap with the Houston FBI office.
A second employee was inside the van at the time.
A short gunbattle broke out during the hijacking, but there were no reported injuries, officials said.
The armored security van was later found abandoned at the Colonial Apartments, 900 N. Durham. The van appeared to have been struck by gunfire.
“He could have had a vehicle stashed at that location or a vehicle stashed close by,” Dunlap said.
Investigators did not have a detailed description of the hijacker.
He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from the security van.
Crime Stoppers will offer up to $5,000 for information leading to his arrest. Call 713-222-TIPS
