VA. WALMART DISTRIBUTION CENTER SHOOTING LEAVES 1 DEAD

DINWIDDIE, VA -  An employee at the Wal-Mart distribution center in Dinwiddie just south of Richmond shot his manager, then shot and killed himself Wednesday afternoon, according to the Dinwiddie County Sheriffs Office.

The shooter was a 32-year-old Petersburg man who had worked in the shipping department for 9 years. He was working on the day-shift and had just returned from his lunch break when he opened-fire, according to the Sheriff’s office. He shot his manager one time in the leg. He also fired two shots at deputies responding to the shooting before turning the gun on himself. The manager’s injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities say the manager had worked at the facility for 18 years. Authorities say she’s a 40-year-old Petersburg woman, but are withholding her and the gunman’s names until their families are notified. Sheriffs say they don’t have any indication that there was any dispute between the two.

The shooting took place around Noon Wednesday at the 1.1 million square foot facility off Route 460 in Dinwiddie. Sutherland Elementary School, located nearby, was placed on lockdown during the investigation. The lockdown was lifted around 1:45 p.m.
