Peace of Mind Vol 1-45: Conducting a Home Security Audit
You may have a home security system installed in your home. When you installed it you may have made sure that it was the highest quality system available. You might have installed a system very recently and assume that you’re completely protected. Unfortunately, you may not be. It’s always smart to take the time every so often to double check your security system and its features. You may find out that new tools have come onto the market. It might now be cheaper or easier to improve your system. You may even find that you’ve missed something or overlooked an important security flaw. Conducting a home security audit is the perfect way to determine if you need to do anything to improve your home security system.

When you conduct a home security audit, it’s important to think like a criminal. Take a look at your home closely and think about how you would attempt to break into it if you were a burglar. This will help you determine if you have any weak points.

Here are Some Tips for Performing a Home Security Audit

Check for covered areas and hiding spots

There are many benefits of home security audit. Trees or bushes that obscure your doors and windows from the street may be good for privacy, but they also let burglars work without being seen. These areas can also become hiding places for criminals who may want to attack you. Trimming back bushes and trees is important, but so installing lightning. Motion-activated lighting is a great way to keep your home safe. All points of entry should be illuminated and it should be impossible to hide from passersby.

Check your locks

Are all of your doors and windows locked from the inside? Make sure that you use strong dead bolts on all exterior doors. You’ll also want to make sure that your garage and shed lock securely as well. Criminals sometimes break into these structures in order to get tools such as shovels and axes that they can use to help them break into your home. Follow our tips for home security audit performance.

Is anything broken or malfunctioning?

Take a walk around your home. Is everything functioning the way it should be? If any of your windows are broken or damaged, you should have them repaired or replaced. If your security system is not working correctly, you will want to get the problems fixed immediately.

Are your valuables easy to see?

Look at your house from the outside. Can you easily see your big screen TV and expensive sound system through the windows? When you get closer, is it easy to spot jewelry, electronics and other expensive goods? If a criminal looks at your home and easily spots several items worth stealing, your house automatically becomes a more attractive target. Keep valuables out of sight.

Facebook Security Tips

Facebook is popular. You likely have an account and so do most people you know. Facebook is a convenient and popular way to stay in touch with friends, share photos and videos and make new connections. However, you’ve probably also heard about some of the security risks associated with Facebook. There are several risks to using the service and you need to use some caution on Facebook. Here are a few Facebook security tips that will keep your privacy and your computer safe. One thing that you should always remember on Facebook (and pretty much anywhere else) is that anything you do online can possibly be shared with the world. Even if you have your privacy settings set and you only have small group of friends, your information could still get out. A friend could accidentally leave his or her Facebook page logged in on a public computer, letting the next user see your entire profile. Also, computers can be hacked and information can get out. Therefore it is always important to think before you post something online. If you don’t post information or comments that could hurt you, you will have less to worry about and fewer security concerns.

In general, it’s important that you do not supply any incredibly personal details such as your social insurance number or any financial information on Facebook. You should also be weary of sharing information with people you do not know. Never give an unknown source personal information and check your privacy settings to ensure that they are set correctly to prevent strangers from viewing your account details. Do not accept friend requests from people you don’t know.

It’s also important to be careful when clicking links that are posted on Facebook. These links often lead to external sites and Facebook does not control their content. Even if a friend or other reputable source posts a link, use caution before clicking it. Some websites can hijack Facebook accounts and automatically post links of behalf of users without their permission. If a friend shares a link that looks strange or out of the ordinary, ignore the link and alert your friend.

Never enter your Facebook login information into any website other than www.facebook.com. Some sites are set up to spoof Facebook in attempt to steal user login information.

Finally, always make sure that all of your programs are up-to-date before using Facebook or any other website. Your web browser, firewall, virus scanner and spyware scanner should all be updated regularly. Make sure that you scan your computer for issues every so often in order to catch anything.

Security for Retail Businesses

If you have a retail business, you understand exactly how many security concerns you have to be aware of at any given time. Whether your store is a stand-alone location or part of a shopping mall, there are many different things to focus on when you are trying to protect your retail business. Video surveillance is a key to keeping your retail business safe. Security cameras allow you to watch several areas of your store at the same time. They aren’t distracted by other tasks and they don’t miss a thing if they are installed and positioned correctly. Modern video surveillance cameras also offer remote monitoring. This means you can watch what is going on in your store from any location with an Internet connection. This is the perfect solution for those who own several businesses or who are on the road a lot.

Prominently-positioned security cameras also work as a deterrent as criminals are much less likely to steal from a company that they know is watching them. It’s simply not worth the risk. In addition, security cameras can make your employees and customers feel safer as they know that they are protected. Remember to place security cameras in stock rooms and storage areas so that you can keep an eye on your stock. For more information on security cameras, please visit our security cameras page.

You also want to consider installing an access control system in your retail location. This will let you monitor who enters your stock room or storage area and keep track of employees and staff as the move through your building. Find out more information on access control systems here.. Article surveillance is also incredibly important. These systems allow you to accurately track merchandise and ensure that it does not leave your store without being purchased. Electronic article surveillance systems should definitely be a part of your retail store’s loss prevention system. For more information visit the article surveillance section of our website.

Wi-Fi Safety Tips

Wi-Fi is almost everywhere these days, from coffee shops and fast food restaurants to libraries, airports and a number of other locations. If you have a laptop or mobile device there’s a good chance that you’ve connected to a public Wi-Fi network in the past. While Wi-Fi is very convenient, it also comes with a few risks. Before logging on at that coffee shop or signing in at that airport, it’s important to take a few precautions.

Always use a firewall when connecting to a public Wi-Fi network. Most modern operating systems come with a firewall program installed and activated by default. Make sure that this program is running before you use a public network and check the settings to make sure that you’re getting the protection you need. Most firewalls allow you to set specific settings that offer additional security when you are logged onto a public network.

If you regularly share files over your home or office network, make sure that all file sharing is turned off when you are using a public Wi-Fi hotspot. Again, most operating systems allow you to turn filesharing off automatically when you connect to a public network or a network other than your standard “home” or “office” location. Also do not set your computer or mobile device to automatically connect to available Wi-Fi networks. Make sure that you log in manually each time.

When you are connecting to a public network, make sure that you are signing on to the official network and not a spoofed network. For example, if you are in the airport in Toronto you may see both “Toronto Airport,” “Toronto Airport Wi-Fi” and “TO Air Network” when searching for networks. One of these networks could be the official network and the others are likely networks set up by someone else in the airport in order to steal personal information. Before logging onto a public network verify the name of the network with someone who works there.

Do not enter any personal or financial information when you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network. Despite your best intentions, someone could be watching every move you make on a public network. Use Wi-Fi networks for surfing the Internet only. Do not use them for banking and do not enter your credit card information. If you are checking your email on a Wi-Fi network make sure that you select “secure connection” from the log in screen and that you sign out when you are done. It’s also important to disconnect from the Wi-Fi network when you are done using it and turn off your wireless network card when you no longer need it. Encrypting your personal data can help protect it from anyone who is spying on your Wi-Fi session. Doing so makes it more difficult to access if someone should gain entry to your computer.

Staying Safe During A Power Outage

Most power outages last only a few moments, but in some cases you can be hit with a longer disruption. Not only can this be a nuisance, but it can also be quite dangerous if you are not prepared. There are a few things you can do to keep yourself, your home and your family safe during a blackout. When the power first goes out, be sure to check and make sure that it’s not limited to you home. If those around you have electricity, check your fuse box or call your power company. You should also consider turning your appliances, electronics and any other devices that are plugged in. Unplug your computers and other sensitive equipment to protect yourself from potentially damaging power surges. Leave your refrigerator and freezer plugged in. Use battery operated flashlights instead of candles. Candles can be quite dangerous and could cause a fire in your home. Do not attempt to light or heat your home with a gas stove, barbecue or any other dangerous device. Not only could you cause a fire, but you also risk carbon monoxide poisoning. Home and personal security are also important. You will need to know if your alarm system and fire alarm will still function without power. If not, you will have to be prepared and not leave your home alone.

Life Saving Advice From Serial Killers

Nadia Fezzani is a Canadian journalist who has conducted extensive research and interviews with many notorious American serial killers. As a specialist on serial killers, Ms. Fezzani gives conferences on the topic to university students and to different organizations. She also works with production companies on TV documentaries. She’s gotten into the minds of some of the most dangerous serial killers alive and learned to understand how they think. She has used this knowledge to provide helpful tips on how you can avoid becoming a victim of a violent attack. People tend to believe that people such as British Columbia serial killer, Robert Pickton, are of a rare species. Yet, in addition to approximately 40 serial killers already caught in Canada, many Canadian serial murderers run free. In fact, 12 serial killers were notorious enough to be given nicknames without ever being found. They still live somewhere among us. The Edmonton Prostitute Killer, the Canada Highway murderer, the Highway 16 Killer, the London Ontario Killer, the NW Territories Headhunter, The Ontario Lover’s Lane Killer, The Ottawa Teen Killer, The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children Murderer, the Toronto Prostitute Executioner, the Toronto Rape Slayer, the Montreal Boys Slasher and the Montreal Gay Ripper are all serial killers who were never caught. Also, many homicides will never be linked together even if some of the murderers are captured. It is sometimes impossible to know if the crimes were committed by the same individual. What can we do to avoid being victims of attackers? We all know the basic rules: lock your doors, do not talk to strangers, get an alarm system, have a guard dog at home and trust your instincts. Other less-known advice includes having deadbolt locks on all doors and avoiding wearing a pony tail at night. In addition, never bring God into a conversation when you face an attacker, as it will only enrage them. Fortunately for us, American serial killers today open up to give us tricks in their own words on how to better protect ourselves from others like them. Their advice is effective against any type of aggressor. Take their tips into consideration since they come from the experts and, ironically, usually relate to their own crimes.

Joel The Ripper

A little bullied boy from kindergarten, always rejected, adopted Joel Rifkin was treated terribly during his entire childhood at school. His father then killed himself after being diagnosed with cancer, which put Joel into an even greater depression phase. Although he had two friends and a few girlfriends we can count on one hand, he was withdrawn into silence and developed a “social phobia.” Consequently, he turned to prostitutes for 17 years and became addicted, to a point where street workers were his main expenses. During his activities, he contracted herpes, gonorrhea and was tested positive for hepatitis (he later on found out he did not actually contract hepatitis). He killed 17 of the prostitutes. He did so out of rage, out of vengeance and to keep them from dying miserably from drugs or diseases. He even murdered to save husbands from contracting AIDS before going back to their wives. Today, he wants to start a foundation that would help “eliminate” prostitutes, by helping them to leave the streets and housing them after detoxication, so they can move on with their life.

Security Advice

Street girls don’t have to be anywhere on a regular schedule, so if they are missing for a couple of days, no one really notices. Avoid being in that situation; tell people where you are going, who is accompanying you and when you’ll be back. With Internet dating becoming increasingly popular today, if you’re going to meet someone for the first time, go with another person you trust. Your friend doesn’t have to sit with you; he or she can hang out in the background. However, if you ever end up alone at some point and are in a situation where you feel you have to defend yourself, don’t go for the throat but rather kick or punch lower. This has a better effect: no matter how big the guy is, if you hit the right spot, he’s down!

Property Crime in America Costs Over $17 Billion Per Year

There were an estimated 2,222,196 burglaries in 2008, up 2 percent from 2007.There were 3.6 percent more burglaries in 2008 than in 2004 and 5.8 percent more than in 1999. 61.2 percent of all burglaries in 2008 involved forcible entry. We want to make sure that you’re safe from all threats, which is why we have released this information on how you can prevent hackers from stealing your data and potentially your identity!

Choose a Safe Web Password & Prevent Hackers from Stealing Your Information

Internet passwords are one of the most important ways to prevent hackers and protect your life online and in the real world. If someone finds out your password, they can take out a loan in your name, get you fired from your job or even steal your identity. Don’t let this happen to you. Below are a few tips for choosing secure Internet passwords. Don’t use anything obvious Your hometown, date of birth or spouse’s name should never be used as passwords. These can be easily figured out by almost anyone who knows anything about you. Prevent hackers by choosing more complicated passwords. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols wherever possible Instead of choosing a word like “cookie” for your password, use something like “C00k!e” instead. This will be much more difficult to guess and just as easy for you to remember. This can prevent hackers. Use a different password for each site A good way to create easy-to-remember passwords for each website you use is to add modifiers at the beginning and end of your base password. Using the “C00k!e” password above, your password for your email could be “EmC00k!eail” and your password for your bank could be “BaC00k!enk.” Change your password regularly You shouldn’t keep the same password for long. To prevent hackers and secure your data, get into the habit of changing all of your passwords every three to six months.

Did You Know? Toronto has the 3rd lowest Crime Severity Index rating among metropolitan areas in Canada? Only Guelph and Quebec City are lower. (Source: Stats Canada)

Canadian Crime Drops in Past Decade, Still Up From 1960s and 70s

This summer, Statistics Canada released stats for police-reported crime in 2009. Crime is once again down, falling 3% between 2008 and 2009 and 17% between 1999 and 2009. The highest crime rates in the country are in the western provinces and northern territories. The only crime increases came in Manitoba and Nunavut. Nunavut had the highest crime severity index ranking in the country and the highest violent crime ranking as well. Prince Edward Island was the safest province in the country. Security systems can keep you safe. Please contact us for more information. In terms of metropolitan areas, Regina, Saskatchewan is the most dangerous region in the country followed by Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Guelph, Ontario, Quebec City, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario are the safest. The national crime rate reached a peak in the late 1980s/early 1990s and the current rate is similar to the late 1970s. However, the crime rate from 1962 to 1972 was much lower than it is today. Canada’s crime rate was 131% higher in 2009 than in 1962, when Statistics Canada first started keeping records. So while the good news is that crime continues to fall, it’s obvious that we have a long road ahead of us.

Contractor Security: How To Prevent Contractors From Robbing Your Home
Contractor Security Whether you’re renovating your home or making some repairs around the house, there will inevitably be a time where you can’t handle a project and you have to look to outside help. Working with a contractor can get the work done much faster, but it’s also important to keep safety in mind. Contractor security is important.

Remember that, in the majority of cases, you will be trusting a contractor with access to your home. You wouldn’t let just anybody into your home, would you? This is why contractor security is so crucial. It’s very important to exercise caution when working with contractors.

Before you hire someone, make sure to check their references. Many people ask for work samples, quotes and reviews of a contractor’s work, but it’s also very important for contractor security that you check more personal references as well. Someone that is skilled in building kitchens or offers a low rate to repair your plumbing may not be a trustworthy individual.

Whenever possible, get the names of some of the contractor’s former clients. You can use these references to not only research work quality, but also to determine if the contractor is honourable and as a part of contractor security research. You’ll want to know if were any problems with the contractor’s previous work relationships.

Once you’ve selected a contractor, the next decision you must make is regarding access to your home. Are you planning on being present during the contractor’s work? Will you be stopping by occasionally to check in? Or will you trust the contractor to work alone in your home?

Contractor Security Tips

If the contractor is working alone, will you be there to let him or her into the house in the morning and lock up at night? Or do you feel comfortable giving a relative stranger a copy of your house key and the code to your security system? This is an important decision you will need to make regarding contractor security.

You will also need to find out if the contractor is planning on using any subcontractors and, if yes, how these people will be monitored. Your contractor may be a trustworthy person, but the three other people he lets into your home to help complete the job may not be. Find out how your contractor knows everyone else involved and make sure you can trust all of these people.

But material theft is not the only contractor security concern you will have. It’s also important to ensure that a contractor isn’t stealing your time. When contracting out work, you need to know if everyone is arriving on time and if they’re working the hours they’re being paid for.

An excellent way to prevent theft and increase productivity is by using security cameras. Just knowing that they’re being watched makes many people more honest and productive and the cameras will record what time the workers start and stop their work. If you have Internet-enabled cameras you’ll be able to watch what’s going on inside your house from anywhere with an Internet connection.

If you don’t have cameras, you can use your home alarm system to make sure people are entering and leaving on time. If you notice that your alarm is being disarmed or armed at odd times, you can be pretty sure that your contractors are not working the hours they say they are!

In addition, at the end of the day when the workers are ready to lock up, they can turn on the alarm and leave your home secure. This improves contractor security a great deal.

How Security Lighting Keeps You And Your Home Safe
Security LightingCriminals do not want to be seen. It is much easier to break into a dark property and stay hidden in the shadows than it is to walk through a lighted area where people will notice you. This is why many break and enters occur at night and why security lighting is such a good way to prevent crime.

Installing security lighting is an excellent way to protect your home or office.

One of the best ways to use security lighting to protect your property is to add perimeter motion-activated lights. These lights will turn on when movement is detected. Not only does this save energy, but it also can startle burglars and draw attention to anyone approaching your property. Leaving a light on all the time usually isn’t practical, but motion-activated lights are a real nuisance for anyone intent on burglarizing a home!

Using Security Lighting

Another great way to use security lighting to protect your home is by installing X10 programmable light timers. These can be scheduled to turn on and off at different times, making it look like people are inside going about their daily lives. A light that is on 24/7 (especially during daylight hours) is a good indication that the home is unoccupied. By creating an atmosphere where lights are automatically set to come on at different times and turned off during the day, no one will know when you’re at home and when you’re not!

Security lighting also makes it easier for security cameras to record details. In complete darkness, standard surveillance cameras won’t record anything but black. An infrared camera can help the situation, but having light shine on the area your cameras are recording is even better.

The positioning and placement of your security lighting is also important. If the paths from the street to your front door or the garage to your house are especially dark, you should definitely place lights in these locations. Not only will the lights prevent trips and falls, but they will also deter criminals and prevent ambushes.
