Public Safety Alert, “Secret Shopper” scams

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a recent increase in “Secret Shopper” scams which advertise primarily on the internet and through email.

These scams offer employment to victims as a “secret shopper” or “customer service evaluator.” Most of these scams have the following common elements:

- victims are sent cheques and told to deposit them into their personal accounts

- victims are then asked to shop at area stores such as Walmart and Canadian Tire and “evaluate” the service

- victims are always told to evaluate a money transfer service such as Western Union and forward the bulk of the value of the cashed cheque abroad, usually to the United States

- the above tasks are usually required to be completed within 48 hours of receiving a cheque

The victims will be notified by their banks within one to two weeks that the cheque that was deposited to their account is a forgery and the victims are responsible for the entire amount of the cheque.

Police are asking the public to be cautious when depositing cheques from companies or individuals unknown to them.

If depositing a suspicious cheque, it is suggested that a hold be requested to allow sufficient time for the cheque to properly clear .

The public should always be suspicious when sending cash abroad to persons unknown to them.
