Police Officers of the Month for February 2012: Constables Scott Jackson, Alison Louie, Joshua Sarasua. Edin Aeljkovic and Mark Zettler, 23 Division

On February 9, 2012, several calls were made to 9-1-1 for the sound of gunshots, only yards away from an elementary school.

Both uniform and plainclothes officers responded to the call and saw four men running from the area. The officers broadcast the suspects information over the radio, which lead to one of the men being arrested immediately.

Constable Joshua Sarasua pursued a second man. While running, the man was displaying characteristics of an armed person. Constable Sarasua was able to effect a gunpoint-arrest and took the man into custody without further incident. While this arrest was taking place, Constable Edin Zeljkovic took a man into custody who had received a gunshot wound to his leg, prior to police arriving. She immediately rendered first aid to the man and requested an ambulance be dispatched to her location.

Constables Mark Zettler, Scott Jackson and Alison Louie spotted a third man matching the description that was broadcast. As they pursued him, he is alleged to have tossed a loaded firearm into a backyard while he ran from the officers. He was arrested a short time later.

Further investigation led to the seizure of two loaded handguns.

In recognition of their bravery and dedication to duty, these officers have been selected as Police Officers of the Month for February 2012.

Police Officer of the Month for January 2012: Sergeant Jeffrey Moyer, 55 Division

On January 4, 2012. Sergeant Jeffrey Moyer, along with officers from 12 Division, conducted an inspection on a licensed premises which had been the centre of many complaints from residents regarding loud noise and disorderly conduct.

Sergeant Moyer determined that the owner was in violation of a number of regulations and charged him, along with seizing alcohol as evidence. The owner allegedly took Sergeant Moyer aside and asked for special consideration, offering him money each week in exchange for the charges to disappear. He was also allegedly looking for further future protection from police enforcement.

Recognizing the seriousness of the request, Sergeant Moyer deferred arrest and agreed to speak with the owner regarding his proposal at a later date.

Sergeant Moyer notified his supervisory officers of the alleged bribe and an operational plan was developed. An investigative team was selected and Sergeant Moyer established a follow-up meeting with the owner to further discuss his offer. During the following meetings, the owner allegedly made cash payments to Moyer and detailed his expectations curtailing police enforcement activities at the establishment. The owner allegedly outlined an anticipated payment schedule and his intention to enlist his illicit services full time.

With evidence now in hand, the owner was arrested and charged with Bribery of an Officer and Attempt to Obstruct Justice. A clear message was to be made, that the honour of the Toronto Police Service is resolute and that any invitation to compromise our integrity will not be tolerated.

In recognition of his superior investigative skills and dedication to duty, Sergeant Jeffrey Moyer has been selected as Police Officer of the Month for January 2012.
