Home security and safety tips
With the warmer weather upon us, the Toronto Police Service tends to see an increase in the number of reported break-and-enters.
This can be attributed to leaving doors and windows open or unlocked and tools or items left outside being used to assist with gaining entry into the home.
In order to better protect your home and property, members of the public should consider the following:
- Does landscaping or fencing obscure the view to your property from neighbouring properties? Are there any areas around doors or
windows where a person could hide? Are there areas of contrast or shadow around your property where intruders can loiter without being seen? If yes, consider adding motion sensitive lights, reducing or pruning trees and shrubs, or altering fencing so intruders can be seen.
- If you are going on vacation, inform a neighbour of your departure and return dates, cancel all deliveries to your home, arrange to have the lawn cut, use clock timers to activate lights/radios at various intervals, have a neighbour pick up newspapers and mail, store small valuables in a safe deposit box, ensure all entry points are secured, including mail chutes, milk chutes, garage doors and upstairs windows.
Lastly, if you are a user of social media, the Toronto Police Service recommends the following:
- don't broadcast on social networking sites your vacation plans or times you won't be home,
- if using location 'check-in' services, keep your updates private,
- disable geo-location tags on digital cameras and mobile devices.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or people prowling in residential areas should report it by calling 416-808-2222. "If you see it, say it."
