Peace of Mind: Recently Released Criminals Can Hurt You – Vol #9

Protect Yourself From Dangerous Criminals

By: Sean O’Leary
prison-barsA convicted rapist who is considered a “high risk to re-offend” has been released from prison and is living in Toronto.Ronald Peter Tibando was convicted of raping two women in parking garages in 1980. He was paroled in 1989, but was placed back in prison after assaulting a woman as she stepped off of a bus. He also assaulted two female staff members while in prison.

Toronto Police Services issued a community safety notification upon his release.

This situation highlights the need to remain aware of your surroundings and who lives and works in your neighbourhood at all times. This is especially true for when you are traveling alone. Tibando attacked his victims in parking garages and parks; isolated areas where he could catch them alone.

Whenever you are alone in an area where others cannot easily see or hear you, be sure to exercise extra caution. Stay alert and watch your surroundings and avoid any situations where you could be harmed. When in doubt, call a friend on your cell phone and tell him or her everything that’s going on. Reporting someone’s appearance to a friend over the phone could keep you safe.

If you feel as if you are in danger, take a different route and avoid the situation all together.

Staying Secure Online

1137473491-8910These days people are sharing more and more of their personal information online. Thanks to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and a variety of other social media websites, it is now easier than ever to invite friends to social events, post photos, share vacation plans and keep your social circle informed than ever before.

However, with this freedom comes new security risks as well. When sharing information online it’s important to remember that anything you share online could be easily distributed to the general public.

The first thing you should always do before sharing personal information online is consider who could possibly see your posting. Social media messages are easily shared and forwarded to others, so do not post anything that you do not want others to see.

It is also incredibly important to keep a diligent eye on your privacy settings. You will want to make sure that the general settings as well as the settings for particular posts or events are set to your specifications. Failure to do so can have very serious consequences.

For example, a teenage girl in the United Kingdom recently created a Facebook invitation for her birthday party. She meant to invite 15 friends, but accidentally marked the event as “public” rather than private. This meant that anyone could see the invite. More than 21,000 people replied and anyone who visited the public invitation was able to see the girl’s picture, address and phone number.

Obviously this was a huge security risk to the girl and her family. Always be aware of who can see the information that you post online.

The same is true for posting about your location. A post on Facebook or Twitter that you are going to be on vacation for a month could be seen by someone who wants to break into your home.

Police in British Columbia and Ontario recently warned people to avoid mentioning vacation plans on Twitter and other social media website for this exact reason

Staying Safe During A Power Outage

Most power outages last only a few moments, but in some cases you can be hit with a longer disruption. Not only can this be a nuisance, but it can also be quite dangerous if you are not prepared. There are a few things you can do to keep yourself, your home and your family safe during a blackout.

When the power first goes out, be sure to check and make sure that it’s not limited to you home. If those around you have electricity, check your fuse box or call your power company.

You should also consider turning your appliances, electronics and any other devices that are plugged in. Unplug your computers and other sensitive equipment to protect yourself from potentially damaging power surges. Leave your refrigerator and freezer plugged in.

Use battery operated flashlights instead of candles. Candles can be quite dangerous and could cause a fire in your home. Do not attempt to light or heat your home with a gas stove, barbecue or any other dangerous device. Not only could you cause a fire, but you also risk carbon monoxide poisoning.

Home and personal security are also important. You will need to know if your alarm system and fire alarm will still function without power. If not, you will have to be prepared and not leave your home alone.

Protect your Home with these Security Tips from a Burglar

There are over 12,392 reported burglaries in Toronto each year. These burglaries are not unique to certain neighbourhoods or pockets of the city; every home in Toronto is susceptible to the threat of break-ins. There are various techniques residents implement every day to protect their home from this looming threat, some strategies work, while others are less successful. How do you know if you are taking the right steps to protecting your home? In a recent article in the Bayview Post by Malcolm Johnston, an unnamed ex-convict and burglar visited a handful of neighbourhoods throughout Toronto and detailed what home owners can do to safeguard against burglaries.

One of the first lines of defence that many home owners use to prevent break-ins is a security alarm system. However, as the ex-convict points out in the story, an alarm system is useless if it is not properly installed. Most alarm systems are triggered by motion detectors placed throughout a home. When armed these motion detectors will trigger the alarm if motion is detected. According to the burglar in the story most of these motion detectors leave a foot and a half gap in coverage along the floor. He indicated that many times he would be able to bypass a motion detector by crawling on the floor. If he saw the monitor go red he would lay silent and still until the light turned green. There are two ways to ensure that your motion detectors provide the best possible protection. The first is position them so they cover the floor. The second is position them in places that hide them from intruders. The burglar in the story admitted that if he ever set off the alarm, he left as quickly as he could.
